Motivated Leaders Motivate

I’m sure you’ve heard it before….

Inspired people inspire

Delighted teams delight

And so, it follows

Motivated leaders motivate.

I feel this is becoming a find your why piece. Let’s differentiate:

Why is our inspiration, and it keeps us in alignment with our values and ethics over time.

Why keeps us in the race.

Motivation defines our pace.

Motivation is the daily grind; it’s the daily energy that infuses you to act; and in turn, infuses your teams with the energy to act.

Our work becomes meaningful when we see it progress, when we see it in action. So it is important as leaders that we keep a project moving. Through pace.

  • We as leaders set the pace, and need to change it up to keep it interesting.

  • We need to be mindful that each team member responds to individual motivation AND we need to appeal to a group motivation.

The only way this can be done effectively is to do it intentionally and clearly.

  • We, as leaders, need to orchestrate it.

Ever been in a drum circle?

There are many ways to follow pace. If we as leaders set a methodical 4:4 timing:

One    Two    Three   Four

We can allow others to play with rhythm:

One and Two and Three and Four and

Or even a little more syncopated:

One and-and Two and-and Three and Four

All of these fit the pace.

We just need to set one.

In context, with intention, clarity and ownership.

And then we can support freedom within that pace.

How?

We discover and explore how to set the pace according to our strengths and the context of the project.

And then we set it.

We may need to push the pace to deliver on schedule.

We may need to slow the pace to allow for improved integration.

And we learn the art of Leadership.

We do the work.

And practise it every day.

Because people are worth it.

Sometimes, the best motivation comes from example: When we see someone working on their craft with conviction and discipline; we witness their showing up day in and day out, and their commitment to improvement.

How amazing.

We are in desperate need of good leadership.

Please be that leader.
